Supplements for Treating Joint Pain
Joint pains are usually caused by injuries to tendons, ligaments or bursa surrounding the joint. It can be also caused by injuries to bones, ligaments and cartilages within the joints. These lead to pain in the elbows, shoulders, hands, and knees.
Commonly Used Supplements
It is a natural component found in cartilage, which helps to reduce inflammation and pain by preventing bones from rubbing against each other. These amino sugars play an important role in preventing cartilage breakdowns.
Glucosamine sulfate and glucosamine hydrochloride are the two types of glucosamine, found in supplements. Studies show that glucosamine sulfate is a much better option compared to glucosamine hydrochloride as the former helps to reduce joint pain caused by osteoarthritis.
It is recommended to consume a dosage of 1500 mg per day and if this cause upset to the stomach try three 500mg doses per day.
MSM is one of the commonly used supplements to treat joint pains. According to recent studies, MSM reduces pain and improves the functioning of joints.
It is recommended to consume a dosage of1500-6000 gm per day.
Boswellia is usually used to treat joint pains caused by arthritis and these extracts have chemicals called Boswellia acids which have anti-inflammatory effects.
Studies have shown that, these extracts could reduce the pain of patients suffering from osteoarthritis. It is recommended to consume a dosage of either 100 mg once a day or 333 mg three times a day.
Devils claw is used to treat joint pains caused by osteoarthritis and these have chemicals called harbourside which has anti-inflammatory effects. It is recommended to consume a dosage of 600-800 mg three times a day. This supplement currently doesn’t have any studies to support them, but in the future, they’ll be backed by quality research.
Like glucosamine, chondroitin helps to reduce inflammation and pain by preventing bones from rubbing against each other.
Studies have shown that chondroitin could help to reduce stiffness and pain in the joints. When taken for a long time, these supplements have slowed down the progression of osteoarthritis.
It is recommended to consume a dosage of 400-800 mg two or three times a day.
Fish oil contains eicosapentaenoic acid, omega-3 fatty acids and docosahexaenoic acid with anti-inflammatory effects.
Fish oil reduces joint pains caused by rheumatoid arthritis but does not reduce symptoms caused by osteoarthritis. It is recommended to consume a dosage of 300-1000 mg per day.
